Fashion related (and totally non-fashion related) things that have made my world go round over the last seven days…

Scrabble game

Hello 2014

Happy New Year! Did you have a lovely New Year’s Eve? We spent four blissful days in the Welsh countryside, with nothing but mountains, board games and a log fire for company. This little retreat was just the ticket after such a busy Christmas, and when I’ve managed to edit the photos I’ll be posting all about it!

#BristolBloggerMeet

Yesterday I enjoyed a very impromptu afternoon at the blogger meet arranged by Beky. I only found out about it on Friday and enjoyed an afternoon of shopping, eating and visits to Lush (can’t believe I’ve never been there before!) and the Benefit counter in Boots for some pampering, courtesy of Benebabe Ashton. Full post on the day to follow soon…

Diary doodling

Today I finally got my hands on a new diary and I’m taking great delight in filling it in with coloured pens, marking birthdays, anniversaries and trips we have planned. What can I say? Paperchase is a ridiculously fulfilling experience for me.

This week I’ve been…

Blogging about: My last post from 2013 – a round-up post of outfits worn (and blogged) over the last 12 months.

Listening to: This week I really enjoyed a Radio 4 podcast on the legacy Buffy the Vampire Slayer and strong female characters. Podcasts aren’t normally my thing but as a big Buffy fan in my teens, this was a very interesting listen, so I’d recommend it if you also had a girl crush on B.

Watching: 2013 beauty round-up videos. I’m a sucker for ‘favourites’ videos at the best of times and there have been so many ‘best of 2013’ videos, one of my favourites being this one from Essie Button.

Reading: Catching up on back issues of ELLE magazine and Sunday newspaper supplements from the comfort of our Welsh cottage.

Festive feasts

It’s no secret that I love my food, in particular large helpings of cheese and crackers. Add wine and all our Bristol friends to the mix and you have last Sunday afternoon. Ten of us crammed into our small living room to chat, drink and eat A LOT of cheese, enjoying a proper catch-up before we all go our separate ways for Christmas. It was such a fun evening, I’m only sorry that there wasn’t any cheese left the next day.

Populaire

This french film set in the 1950s has been on my radar since it was released in the UK earlier this year. From the quirky CMYK opening credits to the uh-mazing costumes, not to mention the colour coordinated nail varnish, I fell in love with this film. I wish I could dress like the lead character every day, and even attempted a beehive and feline flick eyeliner this morning!

This week I’ve been…

Blogging about: Hamilton House’s Coexist fashion show made an appearance on the blog this week, as did a cheeky Christmas wishlist. For the record, if you feel like buying me any of these gifts, I’d be perfectly ok with that.

Listening to: Christmas songs –yep, I’ve caved. Festive songs (albeit in small measure) have started to appear in my playlists and I’m not even sorry!

Watching: I finally caught up on Channel 4’s Liberty of London this week. It’s fascinating watching the all the different departments prepare for Christmas and the Managing Director try to squeeze every drop of selling space out of the iconic building.

Reading: At this time of year it’s easy to get carried away with shopping, and this article from George Monbiot about materialism is a sobering read. Another article from the Guardian caught my eye this week, all about Dawn O’Porter’s new vintage book. While I don’t agree that vintage ‘is about to have a big moment’ – I think it has been enjoying one for several years – the book and accompanying TV show definitely sound like my cup of tea.

SWB Quiz-polaMademoiselle C

This documentary follows Carine Roitfeld on her journey from editor of French Vogue to founder, editor and stylist on her own magazine, CR Fashion. I was expecting a slightly frosty Roitfeld, à la Anna Wintour in The September Issue, but Carine was passionate and extremely maternal, gushing with pride over her pregnant daughter, Julia. I couldn’t find a cinema showing this in Bristol when it came out in September, but it’s now on LoveFilm Instant so if you like a little fashion with your documentaries, I recommend it.

#SWBloggersQuiz

On Tuesday night I popped along to Bristol’s Greenhouse for the South West Bloggers Network Christmas Quiz. Teaming up with Jo & Victoria, Lily and Josie, we tackled questions about Christmas, music and the fine city of Bristol, and we only chuffing won! It was lovely to catch up with everyone, not to mention share a cheeky bottle of celebratory wine, too.

Coexist Fashion Show

On Thursday I had the pleasure of attending the Coexist fashion show at Hamilton House, courtesy of Banker and Benefit. I’ll write more about the show when I’ve had a chance to edit my photos, but it was a great opportunity to see the work of local designers and crafters, plus support such a brilliant city arts space.

This week I’ve been…

Blogging about: Playing with proportions is an outfit post featuring Zara, Topshop and my rarely seen waistline. The local fashion design competition launched by Heartfelt Bristol – it’s got me wanting to dust off my old sketchbooks and start drawing again!

Listening to: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis playlists on repeat – I can’t get enough of their track Same Love, featuring Mary Lambert.

Watching: Aside from Mademoiselle C, I’ve been chuckling at the latest series of Fresh Meat – student house cringe comedy at its best.

Reading: I have a stack of magazines that are sat in my reading pile including Company, InStyle, Elle and Glamour that’ve barely made a dent in.

GK Nails launch party-Rock The Week

GK Nails launch

Bristol based MUA Grace Kingsley has only gone and launched her own nail designs! The launch party took place at Wild at Heart, a quirky bar-cum-hair salon in central Bristol, on Wednesday evening and I popped along with Hayley, Gina and Lily to see the new collection. I’m not usually that into nail art (mostly becuase my nails tend to chip if they so much as look at a bottle of nail polish) but Grace has designed some beautiful press-on nails featuring moustaches, bows and even Hello Kitty. To see the GK Nails designs and be first in line to buy a set when it launches tomorrow, click here.

Public Service Broadcasting

On Tuesday a couple of our friends came down from Cheltenham to see Public Service Broadcasting with us at the Anson Rooms. PSB have a very unique sound, taking old public information films from the 1930s-1950s and layering synth, guitar and even banjo sounds over the top. The result is a climatic collection of songs, my personal faves being ‘Everest’ and ‘Spitfire’.

Running Routines

The colder days aren’t exactly making me jump out of bed to go running, but I have finally settled back into the habit of going out a couple of times a week. Since I switched to using my New Balance trainers, I’ve had less problems with my feet and I feel like my stamina is definitely improving. It’s still a far cry from last year, when I was running so much I even went out on Boxing Day and New Years Day, but hopefully that tradition will continue!

This week I’ve been…

Blogging about: Origins Mask Marvels – I just couldn’t wait till Christmas to try these face masks out. Festive knitwear and tartan – an outfit post featuring a very cosy jumper from George.

Listening to: Far too many Disney soundtracks, Black Sheep by Gin Wigmore and Coming Back Home by Ellen & The Escapades.

Watching: House of Cards – a slick political drama based in Washington staring Kevin Spacey. I’m three episodes in and already addicted.

Reading: Carolyn Franklin’s editorial on pornography and fashion for i-D and Venue magazine’s open letter to the publishing company who shut them down after 31 years.

Rock The Week - Oxfam Fashion blog

Oxfam Fashion

Technically this should have been included in last week’s RTW post, but I wanted to include it as I’ve had a couple of new posts on the Oxfam Fashion blog this month. The first was all about how to survive a vintage kilo sale, the second one explained how you can get a head start on shopping for S/S14 trends, plus there is also a bonus party dress post that wen’t up this week. As if that wasn’t enough I’ve also been working on a Christmas crafts DIY which I’ll link to soon.

Scrabble Sundays

This weekend has been very house-centric – yesterday we started painting the outside of our house and today we’ve been hanging picture frames on the stairway – so this afternoon Mr Ship-Shape and I snuck off to the pub for a game of Scrabble and a couple of drinks. It may not be a rock ‘n’ roll end to the weekend but what can I say? I’m a sucker for a triple word score…

A Thousand Splendid Suns

This week I finished reading a book that I started back in September and kept picking up and putting down, then – I don’t know if you do this too? – I began reading it again and couldn’t put it down. I even looked forward to when I could excuse myself, go up to bed and start reading! The novel is A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini, who wrote The Kite Runner. It’s a tale of two young women growing up in Afghanistan and is an incredible insight to the history of the country, spanning four decades. Trust me when I say you need to read it.

Christmas decorations at House of Fraser

Christmas at House of Fraser

On Thursday I started the evening by heading to House of Fraser’s Christmas preview at Cabot Circus. It was the first festive event I’ve been to this year and it was lovely to catch up with some of my favourite Bristol bloggers over mulled wine and miniature mince pies. I fell hook, line and sinker for the adorable Christmas decorations – I’m ashamed to say I’d never even visited the top floor of House of Fraser before this event but I’ll definitely be back.

New music

Thursday was a good day – after House of Fraser I met up with Mr Ship-Shape to celebrate our eight year anniversary. We met working behind the bar at a live music venue so we decided to revisit our past with a gig at The Fleece. We saw The Cadbury Sisters (a trio of three-part harmony perfection) and Treetop Flyers who had a 70s soul-rock sound that blew us both away. I don’t feel qualified enough to say that either band are ‘up and coming’ but if you’re after some new music, go have a listen – I promise you won’t be disappointed!

Home girl

This weekend we travelled to Bournemouth for a friend’s 30th birthday. It was a whistle-stop tour but we managed to squeeze in a roast dinner with my parents, a visit to Grandma Ship-Shape’s house and a night out on the town with friends I haven’t seen in years. The older I get, the more I value spending time with my family and I can’t wait to see them again at Christmas : )

Berlin

The reason the blog has been a little quiet is that I was busy in Berlin, eating pastries and catching up with my friend who now lives over there. It was a brilliant trip, though it was marred slightly by me catching a bug on the way home – needless to say, an aeroplane is not the place to be when you’re feeling unwell. I took lots of photos during the trip so will be posting about my adventures soon.

Pies!

This weekend Mr Ship-Shape and I finally got around to using the pie dish and Pieminister book that my mother gave us last Christmas. He made the filling (‘moo and blue’) while I had a stab at making rough puff pastry for the first time, attempting my best Great British Bake Off impression in the process. Shockingly it turned out rather well and our dinner guests gobbled up every last crumb – eat your heart out, Paul Hollywood!

Pretty Nostalgic magazine

A couple of weekends ago I was invited to attend the Pretty Nostalgic gathering at Kingsweston House. As part of my press kit I received a couple of copies of the magazine and have finally had a chance to read this ‘spend wisely, waste less, appreciate more’ paper approach to life.

The design makes my heart sing – square matte pages filled with textured backgrounds, quirky illustrations and ever-so-slightly aged photography – and the features are just as satisfying, covering every topic from the evolution of swimwear in line with ideals of the female body, to cider pressing and tips for spotting genuine vintage finds. If you’re inspired by vintage living or simply making life stretch a little further, it’s well worth a read. For more info on the magazine, take a look at their website.

Rock The Week Rocky Road

Spring forwards, Fall back

This is it. I’ve been in denial about the changing seasons for weeks now but as the clocks go back and the collective sigh from fashion bloggers can be heard across Twitter (goodbye, post-work outfit post photographs) I’ve finally acknowledged that it’s no longer summer. To combat the glumness, I’ve been filling my evenings with Scrabble, rugby matches – a rather soggy Gloucester vs Bath on Friday – and lots of comfort food.

#GBBO

This week the Great British Bake Off final aired and my friend Polly was in town from London, so we hunkered down on the sofa with some homemade rocky road to watch it. I was Team Kimberly and Polly was Team Frances – in case you haven’t seen it yet I won’t mention the winner, but will instead direct you to this article written by the other finalist, Ruby Tandoh. I first spotted it on Charlotte’s blog and it really struck a cord with me, not least because I found myself reading far too much into each contestant’s comments and expressions than was necessary.

Fitness + Fashion

On the blog this week, I wrote about what to wear when you don’t want to exercise. For me that means wearing something that’s comfortable, practical and that looks good – shameless as it sounds, it really does motivate me when I feel good about what I’m working out in. Fitness aside, I’m off to Berlin soon so if you have any travel tips for me don’t forget to leave them on this post!

Rock The Week - Breakfast at The Bristolian

Breakfast

Last weekend Mr Ship-Shape and I treated ourselves to breakfast at The Bristolian on Picton Street. I’ve been ill with a nasty cold for most of this week and haven’t had much of an appetite, so thinking back to the delicious Belgian waffles with bacon and maple syrup served there have kept me sane. The café is tiny and always packed on the weekends but well worth a visit, particularly if you’re vegetarian – they have lots of veggie options and a couple of vegan ones, too.

Topshop sale

Did you know there is a mid-season sale happening in Topshop at the moment? If you have any sense or willpower, I suggest you don’t go in there. I did yesterday and came out with several new additions to my wardrobe that will no doubt crop up on the blog, but my bank account has been weeping as a result. On the plus side, I’ve been clearing out lots of clothes for recycling, selling and swapping, to counteract this high street splurge.

Dresses and destinations

On the blog this week – an outfit post showing the clothes I found at Judy’s Vintage Kilo Sale. There were so many good finds that I’m tempted to go back when the one day event returns to Bristol next month. I also put together a little wishlist for my upcoming trip to Berlin. I’ve never been there before so I can’t wait to explore – if you have any recommendations for places to eat, shop or visit, do let me know!

The Ten Pound Suit Band at Blue Lagoon

Swingbilly style

Despite typing this while watching the rain hammer it down outside, this week has been great for numerous reasons, not least a Friday night session dancing to The Ten Pound Suit Band. I saw this ‘swingbilly’ band with friends at the Blue Lagoon bar on Gloucester Road, and their blend of pop covers and country twang was nothing short of infectious. The tiny bar was so packed that it felt like we’d stumbled into a house party and the band had just set up in the living room. If you live in or near Bristol I’d recommend checking out their gig listings and hot-footing it down to see them this autumn.

Room 101

This week I’ve been writing about elements of blogging that get my goat – have a read and tell me yours, I’m sure I can’t be alone about the whole PR request hashtag, can I? Whistles pyjama trousers have also featured on the blog this week. I know it’s all very 2012, but I swear these are the most comfortable and stylish trousers I’ve found in ages so I’ll be on the hunt for more this autumn. Big shout out to Bonjour, Blogger! for featuring the post on their Saturday Summary, too.

New heights

If you follow me on Twitter you’ll know that I’ve started taking aerial silk classes and this week I finally managed to climb about six feet in the air. Now that may not sound like much, but for a weedy thing like myself who has virtually no upper body strength, it was a huge achievement and had me on a high (excuse the pun) for the rest of the week.
