Dear Santa… A Christmas Wishlist

Christmas wishlist 2013

Jo Malone fragrances in Earl Grey & Cucumber and Blackberry & Bay / Balega running socks / Deep red brogue Chelsea boots, River Island / Zara mens knitted hat / Listography Journal, Play.com / FujiFilm Instax 90, Photojojo/ Lipstick Queen Some Like it Hot gift set / 2014 diary, Paperchase

I know I said no gift guides this year but I couldn’t help putting together a little wishlist for myself, including a new camera – a girl can dream, right?

This year, for the very first time, Mr Ship-Shape and I taking the plunge and hosting Christmas ourselves. Given that we’ll be spending a fair chunk of money on keeping seven people in food and wine for a couple of days, we’ve decided just to give each other stockings this year, so I don’t expect I’ll find a FujiFilm Instax 90 or a new lens under the tree.

We’ll be using the red and white polka dot stockings that I made last Christmas and filling them with small but thoughtful gifts – I already have a couple stowed away that I hope he’ll like!

When I was younger I was all about the Christmas presents – even a few years ago I could barely get to sleep on Christmas Eve for all the excitement – but now I’m a little older, I’ve reached something of a tipping point. A stocking is lovely and I’ll never say no to a bottle of Jo Malone cologne or a pair of wine coloured Chelsea boots, but they can’t compare to family.

I really am just looking forward to spending time with our respective families, enjoying the company of those I see far too infrequently and setting some of our own Christmas traditions, which may or may not include devising a recipe for Baileys hot chocolate…

What are you wishing for most this Christmas?

Under the Christmas Tree…

Jimmy Choo perfume and River Island bag | Ship-Shape and Bristol Fashion

Before 2012 comes to a close I wanted to share some of the goodies that found their way under our Christmas tree this year. From Bastise and Macademia Oil gifts at the South West Bloggers Christmas meet to (quite literally) cheesy Secret Santa presents, I feel very spoiled this year.

While this Christmas has been more typical than remarkable, that’s why I’ve loved it so much. From helping Mama Ship-Shape prepare the veggies for Christmas dinner, to playing board games with my sister-in-law and being unable to say no to second helpings of, well, anything, the past week has been practically perfect.

I hope you found what you wanted under the Christmas tree this year, and that you have a fantastic New Year’s Eve. See you in 2013!

Rock The Week

Fashion related (and totally non-fashion related) things that have made my world go round over the last seven days…

Rock The Week | Ship-Shape and Bristol Fashion

  • It’s the Christmas edition of RTW and the last one of the year! I had the best time with my family – which includes four crazy dogs who all try to fit under the dinner table at once, every year – on Christmas Day, before enjoying Christmas part duex with the in-laws on Boxing Day. I ate lots, laughed lots and wish we could do it all again tomorrow.
  • The last few days have also given Mr Ship-Shape and I a chance to catch up with our friends, which in my case means lots of mamas and their children. While I’m not feeling broody just yet, I’m starting to get the hang of this baby holding lark, and it turns out that I’m also an excellent climbing frame for under-fours : )
  • This year Mr Ship-Shape and I started a new tradition of giving stockings to one another and I was chuffed to bits to receive a camera charm necklace (which looks an awful lot similar to this one) some Benefit goodies and enough chocolate to last till next Christmas. I also got the new Caitlin Moran book, Moranthology, and a gorgeous River Island bag from my parents, so I’m feeling very spoiled indeed!

What’s been rocking your world this week? Did you have a wonderful Christmas? Let me know by commenting below…

All I want for Christmas 2012… Accessories

Christmas Gift Guide: Accessories

So, it has arrived – the last weekend before Christmas. If you’re out looking for last minute gifts for loved ones (or cheeky presents for yourself) take a look at my Christmas 2012 gift guides for inspiration. So far I’ve covered photography and homewares, and this week the last gift guide of the year focuses on accessories.

This list covers modest stocking fillers, such as the pretty bird pendant from Accessorize, to whoppers of presents that you’d be very lucky to find under the tree, such as that neon pink Mar by Marc Jacobs pouch, swoon!

Today I have just one present left to buy, and I’ll be visiting the vintage and charity shops on Bristol’s Gloucester Road in an attempt to find it. Have you finished your Christmas shopping yet?

It’s very nearly the last weekend before Christmas – eek! If you’ve finished your Christmas shopping (lucky you!) but need a hand with pimping up your presents, the lovely Making Things Club are on hand to help. This week their pop-up shop in Cabot Circus has been running wrapping workshops, and there are slots available tomorrow (Friday 21st) throughout the day. The event is free but booking is a must – email making.things.club@gmail.com or pop into the shop to book your place.

Bath Christmas Market | Ship-Shape and Bristol Fashion

Saturday/Sunday

This weekend is your last chance to visit the Bath Christmas market before it closes on Sunday. I visited it with a few friends at the start of the month and it was heaving, so I recommend arriving early and catching the train unless you want to face looking for a parking space with hundreds of other Christmas shoppers! Stalls include foodie treats, Elise Belle jewellery, festive decorations, art, homewares and more.

Have I missed any other local events? What are you up to this weekend?

South West Bloggers Christmas Party

The Birdcage | Ship-Shape and Bristol Fashion

What do you get when you bring together some of the South West’s best bloggers, a picture perfect venue, and a good cause? The South West Bloggers Network Christmas meet-up (#SWBXmas), of course!

The Birdcage on Claire Street was the venue of choice for an afternoon of festive, fashionable fun, connecting bloggers, serving us lots of tea and cake, and raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

It’s always lovely to get out from behind the computer and meet fellow bloggers, but it is weird when you follow someone on Twitter or Bloglovin, recognise them in real life, but can’t just walk up to them and ask them about their cat’s health, or if they did end up buying that Zara jumper the other day… sounds a bit stalkerish, right?

Luckily, after everyone had a chance to arrive and grab a cuppa and a slice of cake, we were all shaken out of our comfort zones and, clutching the coloured felt we’d been given on the way in, tasked with finding everyone with a matching colour and pair up for the SWBXmas Quiz, hosted by Hayley, Gina and Lyzi.

After a tense five rounds featuring Gossip Girl, Prada and  a bag inspired by Lady Gaga’s bum (yes, really), we found out that FrithaLaura and I came in 2nd place, each winning a pampering treat at Neal’s Yard Remedies! Who knew that retaining information about the dress Alicia Silverstone wore in Clueless coud come in so handy?

As well as the quiz, the lovely Birdcage team treated us to teacups of champagne a goodie bag filled with treats and a visit from Santa (see photo above) too. Ticket sales have all gone straight to charity and hopefully this is the start of local meets in the future.

Big thanks to GinaHayleyBee and Lyzi for throwing the shindig, and The Birdcage for hosting and providing us with so many scrumptious treats! If you want to donate money to Macmillian you can do so at the SWBXmas Just Giving page.

All I Want For Christmas 2012… House & Home Gift Ideas

Christmas 2012 Gift Guide - Homewares

Eek, there are just two weekends left to finish your Christmas shopping! If you’re braving the high street this weekend, my Christmas 2012 Gift Guide might just come in handy.

Finding the right present for someone and seeing their face when they open it is always a joy, so over the next few weeks I’ll be sharing my wish lists, ahem, gift guides with you. Yes, I may be borrowing inspiration from what I want to find under the Christmas tree, but I hope these guides will come in handy for you, too.

This week it’s homewares. Having bought our first house this year, furnishings, crafty projects and decorating have been on my mind a lot recently. I love old suitcases and trunks, which not only offer storage but also have the potential, when stacked, to become coffee tables or shelves in their own right. I wish I liked eggs because these Rob Ryan egg cups are so pretty, but they would make the perfect stocking filler, as would this adorable knitted owl cushion.

What gifts will you be buying or making this weekend?

All I Want For Christmas 2012… Photography Gift Ideas

Photography Gift Ideas

Ho, ho, holy moley – it’s nearly Christmas! If, like me, you still haven’t fnished your Christmas shopping yet and are braving the high street this weekend, my Christmas 2012 Gift Guide might just come in handy.

First up, photography fans. Depending on your budget, the list of kit you could by for a photography fanatic could run into thousands of pounds, but these gifts cover everything from the handy stocking filler (a spare memory card) to the ultimate toy for instant photography fans (the Polaroid Z2300). If you’re shopping for a Holga or Diana owner you could buy them some experimental film, or the photography geek that has everything, this necklace or illustration might do the trick.

I’m off to buy some tinsel and stocking fabric now – see you on the battle field!

Bloggers Christmas Party

Bloggers Christmas party

Ah, Christmas! A time when you can be sure of three things; you will cave and eat that second mince pie, you will smile graciously when handed that dodgy Christmas jumper, and you will get invited to the office Christmas party. I don’t know about you but I can live with the first two – festive jumpers are actually on trend this season – but the prospect of the office party is a terrifying thought.

If you’re a blogger, your office probably consists of a laptop, the most recent copy of ELLE/Vogue/Love/W (delete as appropriate) and your DSLR. One person does not a office party make, so why not join forces with other fashion and beauty bloggers this holiday season at MyStreetChic.com’s Christmas Bloggers Party?

This Friday (16th) MyStreetChic.com are taking over Java Bristol from 7-10pm and you can forget about inappropriate use of the photocopier – this Christmas party includes drinks, dancing and a live catwalk show from Boohoo.com. Of course, no fashion soirée would be complete without a goody bag to take home at the end of the night.

Bloggers and fashionistas from around the country will be there – myself included – so if you fancy it only one question remains – what will you wear?

Bloggers Christmas party starts at 7pm at Java Bristol, 9 Park Street, BS1. Tickets cost £5 (which includes a free drink and goody bag) for more info click here

New Year, New Loot – Part One

xmas presents
Thanks to a mystery bug I’ve had a fair bit of time on my hands today so, aside from napping and the odd bout of nausea, I’ve been playing with my camera and all the lovely new treats that came my way over Christmas*.

This year, Christmas stocking aside, Mother Ship-Shape took me shopping in Bournemouth to find a few festive goodies. I love surprises – planning them, being on the receiving end, knowing about somebody else’s surprise (I’m not fussy) – and usually insist on knowing nothing about gifts that might be coming my way. Year after year I’ve had some cracking surprises but this year the shopping trip saved my poor mother from the hassle and panic of buying for a surprise-aholic and also guaranteed everything would fit properly.

I tried on numerous pairs of tailored jodhpur style trousers before finding this stone-coloured pair from New Look. Thanks to my pre-wedding health kick they suit sitting both high on the waist or lower on my hips. They also go rather nicely with my gorgeous new Dorothy Perkins blazer, below. I adore the slight ruching on the pockets and the slouchy feel of the lightweight cotton, and the taupe colour is close enough to beige to be a wardrobe staple, but far enough away from camel to make it too A/W 10.

I also finally managed to get myself a pair of brogues from River Island. A cross between a loafer and brogue, the hidden laces make these shoes far more versatile and I can’t wait till Spring to pair them with bare legs and summer dresses.

Somewhat surprisingly, I gravitated towards very similar garments and came away from Christmas with a practically complete outfit – a rare feat for my shopping trips, as Part Two of this post will show you…

*Sadly not the new Jamie Oliver cookbook – at the moment that is only adding to the nausea feeling : (
