Rock The Week

Fashion related (and totally non-fashion related) things that have made my world go round over the last seven days…

Origins Facial | Rock The Week

  • Magpie nests. On Monday I went to the launch of a new pop-up shop on Gloucester Road, The Nest. A teeny weeny shop packed with local designers, jewellers and cake-makers, the shop is the the brainchild of Magpies & I, better known for their markets around Bristol. The shop is open until next Friday so pop in and say hello to owner Sian if you’re in the area!
  • On Tuesday I treated myself to a belated birthday mini facial from Origins. Based in House of Fraser, Cabot Circus, I’ve been a frequent visitor to Origins for a couple of years now and given how dry my skin has been recently it appreciated the attention. Give it a try if you have stressed out or sensitive skin – it’s the perfect post-work pampering treat : )
  • This week I also finally posted about the fact I’m on Instagram now. I’m still getting to grips with it but I have lots of questions in the post about how you use it, so please have a read and tell me how often you use it and who your fave Instagramers are!

Rock The Week

Fashion related (and totally non-fashion related) things that have made my world go round over the last seven days…

Rock The Week 12/05/13

  • Bank holidays. Despite how long ago it feels, Monday was a glorious day off from work, spent hiking around Cheddar Gorge – followed by a mandatory ice cream – and having friends over for a BBQ in the evening. It’s just a shame the sun didn’t stick around for the rest of the week.
  • Spirit of summer. Between the mass murder of ants, a computer on the blink and some freelance projects, I haven’t had much time to blog this week, but I did make it down to Reiss in Quakers Friars on Thursday evening for their Spirit of Summer event and Instagram challenge. It was a fun evening and was topped off with a spot of shopping in Cabot Circus with Beautiful Plumage, which was great for Topshop’s tills, not so great for my bank balance…
  • Back in the saddle. I’ve been keeping up with running (twice this week but only a few miles for each run) and this morning Mr Ship-Shape and I cycled 15 miles along the Bristol to Bath cycle path. It was so nice and although I know my thighs will be killing tomorrow morning, it felt great to spend a couple of hours exercising outside. The path is popular with cyclists, runners and dog walkers and is great if (like me) you don’t fancy cycling alongside double decker buses and speeding cars!

Rock The Week 28/04/13

  • Lady Boys. On Tuesday evening I accompanied Hayley to see the Lady Boys of Bangkok in Castle Park, which was an eye-opening and entertaining evening with singing, dancing and a whole lot of sequins. The performers rock up in Bristol every year and I’d always wondered what was going inside the colourful tent so now I need to ponder no longer. Their run has finished in Bristol but keep a lookout for their tour across the country.
  • Girly nights. This weekend has been a girl-fest, with some of my favourite ladies coming to town yesterday for a Girls Night Out. These don’t happen very often and it was great to spend time gossiping, getting ready together and dancing to cheesy music in even cheesier clubs and bars. My head is a little foggy today but it was a great night and I feel lucky to have such lovely friends, even if they do insist on Jägerbombs being an acceptable evening beverage!
  • Toast. What with Lady Boys and girly weekends, blogging has fallen by the wayside this week, but I did find time to post about this gorgeous Toast outfit and the recent Bath in Fashion Toast event. I can’t wait to wear this look during summer and given that April is nearly over I’m hoping I won’t have to wait too long :)

Fashion related (and totally non-fashion related) things that have made my world go round over the last seven days…

Rock The Week 21/04/13

  • This week has been a busy one! On Monday I attended the opening of Mouvements de Femmes, the Norman Parkinson exhibition curated by designer Rolad Mouret. I wish I’d been alive when Parkinson was producing images and fashion stories for the likes of Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, as the combination of fashion and the way he showcased it was so exciting.
  • Running. It’s hardly the London Marathon, but this week I’ve started running again. It’s shocking how quickly fitness can disappear – half marathons seem like a decent memory – but I’m starting slow and hoping to get back into shape for summer.
  • On Thursday I went to Bath for the Bath in Fashion S/S13 catwalk show and Blogger Awards, and although I didn’t win it was a fun afternoon, and I’m so grateful for everyone who voted for me! Bath has been my second home recently, as on Friday I went back to the city with Hayley for a talk by Liberty London Girl at the Guildhall. LLG was fascinating and she’s inspired several post ideas that I can’t wait to get started on.

Rock The Week 14/04/13

  • Family. Last Sunday my parents and Grandma Ship-Shape came up to Bristol for the day. It was the first time GSS had seen the house and also the first time we’d cooked a roast dinner for the the family. Fortunately our abode (and the roast) got the seal of approval!
  • Harvey Nics. On the blog this week I wrote about the idea of vintage correspondence as well as the fashion and beauty blogger event at Harvey Nichols, plus all the pampering we received. I felt very spoilt indeed, and I can only describe it as being like a blogger school trip :)
  • Cornwall. Finally, this RTW post is a little later than usual as I’ve been in Cornwall for the weekend. I celebrated my birthday this week and on Thursday I was whisked away on a surprise trip to Mousehole, near Penzance. We ate, walked, took lots of photographs and had our ice creams pinched by seagulls. It went by so fast but I had so much fun – pictures to follow soon!

  • The Hunger Games. I haven’t been feeling very well this week so I’ve been staying in and having lots of early nights. To counteract this I’ve been racing through magazines and the second Hunger Games book, Catching Fire. I read the first part of the trilogy over the summer and unlike a lot of my friends, I was content to leave it there, but then I saw a spoiler on Pinterest a few weeks ago and decided I needed to find out more, so now I’m halfway through the final book. Katniss and her self-obsession is getting a little grating, but I find the idea of The Hunger Games in general quite fascinating – have you read it?
  • HN Bristol. Yesterday Harvey Nichols Bristol held their first ever blogger event and I was lucky enough to attend, enjoying a morning of pampering, chatting and learning about the store’s concept for S/S13 womenswear. Pop back later in the week for a more detailed post on this event!
  • On the blog this week I shared a secret obsession of mine – gooey chocolate brownies. If you like brownies you should give this Hummingbird Bakery recipe a go because it’s so ridiculously simple and the results are divine!
  • An outfit shoot also appeared this week, featuring a vintage floral dress in one of my favourite places in Bristol. The weather hasn’t been too bad this weekend so I’m hoping it’s the last outfit post that will feature a winter coat.

Rock The Week 31/03/2013

  • After two and a half days of nothing but paintbrushes, rollers and dust sheets, Mr Ship-Shape and I have finished decorating our bedroom, above. So far we’ve spent the Easter weekend being very grown-up and tackling some much-needed DIY. It may not look like much, and suffice to say that if there was an open casting call for the next B&Q advert anytime soon, I don’t think we’d get it, but I’m proud we managed to finish a whole room without killing each other!
  • This week on the blog I wrote about my love for the colour red, which manifested in an outfit post featuring the brightest tights known to man. Coloured tights (and patterned leggings) make such a statement in winter, but I’m also looking forward to warmer days when bare legs are all that’s required!
  • I also found out this week that I’ve been shortlisted for the Bath in Fashion Blogger of The Year Award, which is quite blooming exciting! I promise not to waffle on about voting, but if you want to read more about the awards you can read my post (with voting details) here.
  • Finally, the thing that’s most rocking my week is that the clocks have changed. I love spring and the anticipation of summer so I’m looking forward to longer, sunny evenings and perhaps even having time for a post-work outfit shoot, too :)

Rock The Week 24/03/13 Bristol Fashion Week Gangnam Style finale

  • Brrr! How cold has this week been!? The wind, rain and freezing temperatures definitely haven’t rocked my week but this had lead to some self-imposed hibernation, curled up under blankets on the sofa watching films. This week I watched (and loved!) The Amazing Spider-Man for the first time (the reboot version with Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone), some New Girl reruns and Red Lights, with Robert De Niro and Cillian Murphy.
  • Bristol Fashion Week. I did mange to venture out after work on Friday for BFW at Cribbs Causeway with Nicola, which was a nice antidote to the rubbish weather. I can’t wait till it’s actually warm enough to wear S/S13 trends and pack away the leggings and jumpers for good!
  • Gizoogle. This is a bit of a random addition to RTW, but one thing that I loved doing this week was reading my blog through Gizoogle after a friend mentioned it on Facebook. Essentially, Gizoogle translates blogs, websites and Twitter feeds into ‘gangsta slang’, so ‘catwalk’ becomes ‘catstrutt’, ‘fashion’ becomes ‘fashizzle’ and so on. Have any of you seen it yet? Let me know if you’ve used it to read your own posts!

Rock The Week 17/03/13

  • 48 Hour Fashion Fix. This weekend Cabot Circus held their 48 Hour Fashion Fix and I went down yesterday to join in the fun, meet some bloggers and attempt to watch dodge the bad weather. Taking part in their Hook a Handbag competition was a stroke of luck as I won a gorgeous red clutch bag – result!
  • Vintage Fair goodies. This week I blogged about the recent Bristol Vintage Fair at the Passenger Shed. The two dresses I found are soaking in the sink as I type, so once they’re dry (and the weather perks up) I’ll be sure to take a few outfit shots in them.
  • HN Bristol S/S13. Harvey Nichols held their S/S13 show at the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery on Tuesday and it provided me with an opportunity to ogle over the likes of Acne, Mary Katrantzou and Alexander McQueen firsthand.

Rock The Week 10/03/13 | Ship-Shape and Bristol Fashion

  • Bristol Vintage Fair. Yesterday I went to a vintage fair at the Passenger Shed, right next to Temple Meads station, and it was so huge that it took nearly four hours of looking, trying on clothes and chatting before I made it back out into daylight again. Did any of you go? I found a few corkers (and a dress I wish I’d bought) which I’ll blog about soon.
  • Bath in Fashion. I was woefully late posting about a recent blogger outing to Bath, but this week I managed to write not one but two posts about it. The first one features the Fashion Museum, and the second features all the amazing indie shops and boutiques we visited later in the day.
  • Blogger Love. Friday was International Women’s Day and it was lovely to see Twitter and my Bloglovin feed fill up with love, respect and inspiration. It can be easy to get quite snarky online, behind the safety of a screen, so it was refreshing to see camaraderie, IWD inspired #FFs and, dare I type it, lots of positive vibes floating around on the web.
  • On that note… I figured it appropriate to share what I’ve been reading recently. I love Daria’s visual comparison posts, were street style meets cushions, buildings and even Christmas decorations, and Kiki from The Imaginist for showing off clothes beautifully while always keep her identity hidden.
